Apple Unveils Gemini-Powered Siri Overhaul at WWDC 2026

At its WWDC 2026 keynote on June 8, Apple announced a complete overhaul of Siri powered by Google's Gemini AI models, along with iOS 27 Extensions allowing users to choose their preferred AI assistant.

Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicked off on June 8, 2026, with a highly anticipated keynote that unveiled the company's most ambitious entry into the generative AI space. The centerpiece of the event was a complete redesign of Siri, now powered by Google's Gemini AI models under a multi-year partnership deal.

The New Siri

The redesigned Siri acts as a far more capable, context-aware assistant. It now features a dedicated app with a chat-thread interface and can chain multiple commands in a single prompt—for example, checking the weather, reviewing calendar entries, and composing a message all at once. Gemini models are processed through Apple's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure to maintain the company's stringent privacy standards while pulling data from across the user's device including messages, emails, and calendars.

iOS 27 Extensions

A significant addition is iOS 27 Extensions, which allow users to select their preferred third-party AI model—such as Gemini, Claude, or ChatGPT—as their default assistant within a new "Search or Ask" panel. The event was also significant as one of the final keynotes for CEO Tim Cook before he steps down in September 2026.
