CISF Takes Over Security at Five Jammu and Kashmir Prisons

Strategic Shift in Prison Security

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has authorized the deployment of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to secure five additional prisons across Jammu and Kashmir. This deployment includes the newly built high-security prison in Kathua and four district jails in the region. The security transition is designed to standardize security protocols, prevent prisoner coordination of illegal activities, and mitigate the risk of jailbreaks in highly sensitive correctional facilities.

Technological Upgrades and Automated Surveillance

A core element of the security transition is the installation of modern security infrastructure. The jails are being equipped with artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled CCTV cameras, advanced perimeter intrusion detection systems, and real-time video analytics. These technologies automate monitoring, allowing the security apparatus to immediately flag unauthorized movements, package throwing over walls, or unusual behavior patterns, reducing reliance on manual surveillance.

Division of Security Responsibilities

Under the new arrangement, the CISF will take charge of outer-perimeter security, access control points, and high-security isolation zones. The local state prison staff will continue to manage day-to-day administrative functions, internal discipline, and welfare programs within the facilities. This multi-layered approach ensures that highly trained central forces handle security threats, while state staff focus on correctional rehabilitation.
