DRC Ebola Outbreak Reaches 488 Cases and 86 Deaths, WHO Declares PHEIC

The World Health Organization has declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern as a Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo reaches 488 confirmed cases and 86 deaths, with cases reported in neighboring Uganda.

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are managing a severe Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus—a strain for which there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments. As of early June 2026, the outbreak has reached 488 confirmed cases and 86 deaths.

Origin and Spread

The outbreak began in mid-May 2026, with the epicenter identified in the mining town of Mongbwalu in the Ituri province. It has since spread across 25 health zones in the eastern DRC. Critically, the virus has crossed international borders, with neighboring Uganda reporting 19 confirmed cases and two deaths. Uganda has implemented screening and surveillance measures to manage cross-border transmission.

Challenges

The WHO has declared the situation a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The response is complicated by ongoing armed conflict in the region, limited healthcare infrastructure, and the high mobility of populations in mining areas, which has contributed to silent transmission and difficulties in contact tracing. Medical teams are currently focusing on supportive care and symptom management in the absence of targeted therapeutics.
