IISc Researchers Propose Running Bangalore’s Namma Metro Blue Line Entirely on Solar

An Indian Institute of Science study published May 18, 2026, finds that Bangalore's Namma Metro Blue Line could operate exclusively on solar energy, marking India's first corridor-scale analysis of direct solar integration into a metro traction system. IISc study says Namma Metro Blue Line can run entirely on solar power The researchers say the project represents the first corridor-scale techno-economic analysis in India examining direct integration of solar power into a metro rail traction system

The IISc study targets the Blue Line (Phase 2A and 2B), connecting Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport. By applying a techno-economic analysis, researchers assessed the viability of meeting total traction energy demands through solar power. Unlike existing setups that limit solar use to station utilities like lighting and escalators, this proposal focuses on direct traction integration to lower operational costs and grid dependency.

If BMRCL adopts these findings, it would establish a national precedent for corridor-scale green infrastructure, significantly cutting transmission losses and long-term utility overheads.
