Indian Railways Approves ₹1,364 Crore Projects for Kavach Rollout and Signalling Upgrade
Why it matters
Indian Railways, one of the world's largest railway networks, has faced persistent challenges regarding safety, particularly concerning train collisions.
In response, the 'Kavach' system, an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, was conceptualized to prevent accidents by automatically applying brakes if a driver fails to control the train, among other features.
This technology represents a significant leap from traditional signaling methods. The approval of ₹1,364 crore for Kavach deployment and signaling upgrades demonstrates a firm commitment from the Ministry of Railways to prioritize passenger safety and operational reliability. This financial allocation will accelerate the installation of Kavach on more routes and modernize aging signaling systems with electronic interlocking and optical fiber cable networks, improving communication and control. This initiative is vital for India's infrastructure development and public safety. The Kavach system, developed under the 'Make in India' initiative, reduces reliance on foreign technology and boosts domestic manufacturing capabilities in critical sectors. For competitive exams, this highlights governmental efforts in infrastructure, public sector enterprises, technological advancements in transport, and disaster prevention, directly linking to economy and governance syllabi.
