At approximately 7:37 a.m. local time on June 8, 2026, a powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 7.8 struck off the coast of the Mindanao region in the southern Philippines. The epicenter was located offshore near Sarangani province, approximately 32 km southwest of Maasim, at a depth of roughly 33 km.
Impact and Casualties
The earthquake caused significant destruction, including the collapse of commercial buildings in General Santos City, where a Jollibee restaurant and parts of a commercial complex were severely damaged. Initial reports confirmed at least three deaths and several injuries. Power, internet, and water service disruptions were reported across parts of Mindanao, with search-and-rescue operations still ongoing.
Tsunami Alerts
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) issued tsunami warnings for multiple coastal areas including Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, and Basilan. Residents were urged to evacuate to higher ground, with the first waves forecast to arrive between 7:37 a.m. and 9:37 a.m. International tsunami alerts were also extended to parts of Indonesia, Malaysia, Palau, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea.
