PM Modi Inaugurates New Nalanda University Campus in Rajgir, Bihar

A Modern Revival of an Ancient Heritage

In a historic step for India's educational and cultural diplomacy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly constructed campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar. The ancient Nalanda University, which flourished from the 5th century until it was destroyed in the 12th century, was renowned as one of the world's first residential universities, attracting scholars from across Asia. The modern university was established under the Nalanda University Act, 2010, following decisions at the East Asia Summits to rebuild the institution as a symbol of regional connectivity and intellectual exchange.

Infrastructure and Sustainability Features

The new campus spans over 455 acres and is designed as a Net-Zero green campus, incorporating solar power plants, water recycling systems, and eco-friendly construction techniques. It features state-of-the-art academic blocks, a massive library, student hostels, and international centers. The project has been funded and supported by the Government of India in collaboration with 17 partner countries, including members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Australia, and China, emphasizing its international character and collaborative academic environment.

Global Academic Cooperation and Focus Areas

Nalanda University currently offers post-graduate and doctoral research programs focusing on historical studies, ecology and environment, Buddhist studies, philosophy, and management. By re-establishing this academic hub, the government aims to position India as a global educational destination, fostering ties with East Asian nations and promoting research in traditional and modern disciplines alike. The inauguration ceremony was attended by diplomats from various partner countries, signaling strong international support for the university's mission.
