Prime Minister to Inaugurate 600-Kilometer Ganga Expressway Constructed at ₹36,230 Crore

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Ganga Expressway, Uttar Pradesh's longest greenfield road project. The 600-km, six-lane expressway connects Meerut and Prayagraj, significantly reducing travel time to approximately six hours. Built at an estimated cost of ₹36,230 crore, the project is designed for speeds up to 120 kmph and represents a major expansion of India's highway infrastructure.

Key Facts

  • Infrastructure / Ganga Expressway : 600 km greenfield project
  • Cost / Investment : ₹36,230 crore
  • Path / Connectivity : Meerut to Prayagraj
  • Speed / Design : 120 kmph capacity
  • Districts / Coverage : 12 districts in Uttar Pradesh

The Ganga Expressway is a flagship infrastructure project under the Uttar Pradesh government, conceptualized to bridge the developmental gap between the western and eastern regions of the state. Starting at Bijoli village in Meerut and ending at Judapur Dandu village in Prayagraj, it traverses 12 districts including Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, and Pratapgarh. The project follows a greenfield alignment, meaning it was constructed on entirely new land rather than expanding existing roads.

The operational significance of the expressway lies in its design capacity and economic potential. With a six-lane configuration expandable to eight lanes, it is built to handle heavy traffic and features a design speed of 120 kmph. Administratively, the project was managed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA). It includes significant structures like a 3.5 km air strip for emergency landings by the Indian Air Force in Shahjahanpur, modeled after similar features on the Purvanchal and Agra-Lucknow Expressways.
