SEBI Mandates T+0 (Same-Day) Settlement for Top 1000 Listed Companies

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) announced that the T+0 (same-day) trade settlement cycle will be mandatory for the top 1,000 companies by market capitalization starting October 2026.

The Regulatory Announcement

On June 12, 2026, SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch announced the mandatory implementation of the T+0 (same-day) trade settlement cycle for the top 1,000 listed companies on the NSE and BSE. The mandate will come into full effect on October 1, 2026. This follows the successful beta testing of the T+0 cycle that began in early 2024 with a limited set of 25 stocks.

Background & Financial Implications

India is currently on a T+1 settlement cycle, which was fully implemented in January 2023, making India the second country in the world (after China) to do so. Transitioning to T+0 means trades executed today will be settled today???funds and securities will be transferred to the respective accounts on the same day. This drastically reduces counterparty and settlement risks, frees up capital margins for retail investors, and enhances overall market liquidity.

Key Details of the Shift

  • Current Cycle: T+1 (Next day settlement)
  • New Cycle: T+0 (Same day settlement)
  • Applicability: Top 1,000 companies by market capitalization
  • Implementation Date: October 1, 2026
  • Next Phase: Instant Settlement (where trades are settled instantaneously) is projected for 2028.
