West Bengal Hands Over 721 Hectares for BSF Border Fencing Projects

Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that West Bengal transferred 600 hectares of land for border fencing within a seven-day window. An additional 121 hectares were handed over in the strategic Siliguri Corridor. This rapid acquisition aims to plug security gaps and curb cross-border smuggling along the international boundary.

Border management along the 2,217 km stretch with Bangladesh has long been hampered by land acquisition bottlenecks and the state's complex geography. The rapid handover of 600 hectares suggests a break from previous administrative delays. Of particular note is the 121-hectare allocation in the 'Chicken’s Neck' or Siliguri Corridor. As the only physical link between India’s Northeast and the rest of the country, security in this corridor remains a non-negotiable priority.

The BSF—tasked with guarding India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh—requires these land parcels to complete physical fencing and deploy the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS). These systems use a mix of thermal imagers, radars, and sensors to monitor riverine and forest patches where traditional fencing is difficult to maintain. Closing these gaps is the primary strategy for reducing infiltration and cattle smuggling across the porous border.

Glossary
