The 2026 theme—"Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future."—emphasized that climate action extends beyond merely reducing carbon emissions. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) called for a fundamental rethinking of the systems that power global economies, urging individuals and nations to heed the 'signals' sent by the Earth and respond with urgent, collective action.

Host Nation: Azerbaijan

The Republic of Azerbaijan hosted the official global observance in its capital, Baku. The event featured international ceremonies where officials and environmental leaders discussed strategies to address the twin planetary crises of climate change and ecosystem degradation. Azerbaijan used the platform to announce pledges to increase its renewable energy capacity and reduce national emissions in line with its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Global Participation

Over 140 countries participated through community-level events including mass tree plantations, clean-up drives, sustainability workshops, and policy announcements. Governments reaffirmed commitments to the Paris Agreement targets ahead of COP31.
