Why RRB ALP 2026 is a Big Deal
Every year, over 22 lakh candidates eye ALP posts. Why? Because a Railway job means job security, a decent starting salary, free railway passes for your entire family, medical coverage under the Railway Health Scheme, and a pension via NPS — things that private sector jobs simply cannot match at the entry level. And this time, with 11,127 vacancies, your chances are better than the last cycle (which had roughly 9,970 posts). More seats mean the cut-throat competition spreads wider.
Last time, the CBT 1 cut-off for General category hovered around 65-70 marks out of 75. With 11,127 seats this time, the cut-off might dip slightly — but only if you don't make silly mistakes in the application. We'll cover those mistakes later in this post. Keep reading.

Zone-Wise Vacancy Breakdown (All 21 RRBs)
This is the section most websites hide inside a PDF. We have compiled the zone-wise vacancy table from the official notification so you can pick your preferred zone wisely. Remember: you can apply to only ONE RRB, so choose based on your home state, language comfort, and competition level.

| East Central Railway (RRB Patna) | 700 |
| East Coast Railway (RRB Bhubaneswar) | 1,625 |

If you are from Odisha, West Bengal, or Chhattisgarh, these zones offer better seat-to-applicant ratios. But don't blindly chase vacancies — pick a zone where you can comfortably reach the exam centre and medical board.

| Category | Age Limit | Application Fee |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS (Male) | 18 to 30 years | ₹500 |

Selection Process – 5 Stages Explained Simply
Many first-time applicants get confused between CBT 1, CBT 2, and CBAT. Here is the simplest breakdown:
| Stage | What Happens | Marks / Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1: CBT 1 | Screening test. Qualifying only. Marks NOT counted in final merit. Math, Reasoning, General Science, General Awareness. | 75 questions, 60 minutes. 1/3 negative marking. |
| Stage 2: CBT 2 | Part A (Math, Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering, GA) — marks COUNT for merit. Part B (Trade-specific) — qualifying only (35% minimum). | 175 questions, 2 hours 30 minutes. 1/3 negative marking. |
| Stage 3: CBAT | Computer-Based Aptitude Test. Tests memory, concentration, perceptual speed, etc. Mandatory for ALP. Conducted in English & Hindi only. Each battery test must be cleared individually. | Aptitude battery tests. No negative marking. Qualifying in nature. |
| Stage 4: DV | Document Verification. Original certificates checked. Aadhaar verification mandatory. Biometric capture. | — |
| Stage 5: Medical | Medical Examination as per Railway medical standards (Aye-One vision standard). Eyesight is the biggest rejection point here. | — |
CBAT Explained – The Stage That Confuses Everyone
CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test) is unique to the ALP post. NTPC candidates don't face this. Here's what you need to know:
- Who needs to appear? Only candidates who qualify CBT 2. It is mandatory for ALP — no exceptions.
- What is tested? Five aptitude batteries: Memory Test, Following Directions Test, Depth Perception Test, Concentration Test, and Perceptual Speed Test. Basically, can you handle the mental load of operating a locomotive?
- Language: English and Hindi only. No regional languages.
- Is there negative marking? No. But each test has a minimum qualifying standard. You must pass ALL five tests individually.
- Does CBAT score count in final merit? No. It is qualifying in nature. But if you fail CBAT, you are out regardless of your CBT 2 score.
- How to prepare? Practice online aptitude tests for railway psychometric exams. Focus on pattern memory, number-memory, and reaction-time games. There are free CBAT mock tests available on YouTube and coaching platforms.
🧠 CBAT Reality Check: About 15-20% of candidates who clear CBT 2 fail CBAT. It's not about book knowledge — it's about mental sharpness under pressure. Start practicing aptitude games on your phone daily. 15 minutes a day is enough.
Salary & Perks – What You Actually Take Home
Everyone talks about ₹19,900, but what does an ALP actually earn? Here is the realistic breakdown:
| Component | Amount (Approx.) |
|---|---|
| Basic Pay (Level 2) | ₹19,900 |
| Dearness Allowance (DA) | ~₹7,960 (40% of basic) |
| House Rent Allowance (HRA) | ~₹1,592 to ₹5,373 (8-27% depending on city class) |
| Transport Allowance (TA) | ~₹1,800 to ₹3,600 |
| Running Allowance | Varies based on kilometres run (significant for ALPs) |
| Night Duty Allowance | As applicable |
| Gross Monthly Salary (Approx.) | ₹32,000 – ₹40,000+ |
Plus, you get free railway passes for yourself and family, medical coverage under Railway Health Scheme, pension via NPS, and job stability that no IT company can promise. After promotion to Loco Pilot (LP), salary jumps to Level 6/7.
Before You Apply – The Mandatory Checklist
Don't open the application form until you have ALL of these ready. Trust us, 40% of rejected applications fail because candidates start filling the form and realise they don't have something.

How to Apply Online – Step-by-Step (Don't Mess This Up)

| Subject | Questions | Key Topics |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 20 | Number System, Ratio, Percentage, Time & Work, Profit & Loss, Geometry, Mensuration |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 25 | Analogy, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Syllogism, Venn Diagram, Series, Direction Test |
| General Science | 20 | Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Life Science (NCERT Class 10 level) |
| General Awareness & Current Affairs | 10 | Indian Railways, Awards, Sports, National & International Events, Government Schemes |
| TOTAL | 75 (60 minutes) | 1/3 negative marking for wrong answers |
CBT 2 Pattern (Merit Decider)

|---|---|---|
| Part A | Math, Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering, General Awareness | 100 questions, 90 minutes |
| Part B | Trade-specific (Qualifying only — 35% marks needed) | 75 questions, 60 minutes |
Negative Marking: 1/3rd mark deducted for every wrong answer in both CBT 1 and CBT 2. So don't guess blindly. Attempt what you know.
Previous Year Cut-Off Trends (Last ALP Cycle)
While cut-offs change every year based on paper difficulty and vacancy count, here is what the last ALP recruitment looked like. Use this to set your target score:
| Stage | General | OBC | SC | ST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CBT 1 (Out of 75) | 65 – 70 | 60 – 65 | 55 – 60 | 50 – 55 |
| CBT 2 Part A (Out of 100) | 75 – 85 | 70 – 78 | 65 – 72 | 60 – 68 |
| CBT 2 Part B (Qualifying) | 35% (26.25/75) | 35% (26.25/75) | 35% (26.25/75) | 35% (26.25/75) |
*Estimated ranges based on previous ALP recruitment cycles. Actual cut-offs for 2026 will depend on paper difficulty and number of applicants.
🎯 Target Score for 2026: With 11,127 vacancies, aim for 70+ in CBT 1 (General) to be absolutely safe. In CBT 2 Part A, aim for 80+. Part B just needs 35% — don't ignore it, but don't obsess over it either.
Medical Standards – The Hidden Filter
This is where many selected candidates get disqualified. ALP requires Medical Standard Aye-One (A-1). The key requirements:
- Vision: Distant vision 6/6, 6/6 without glasses (no power). Near vision Snellen 0.6, 0.6 without glasses. Must pass the Ishihara colour vision test. Spectacles are NOT allowed.
- Physical: Good hearing, no chronic diseases, normal blood pressure, healthy heart and lungs.
- Height & Chest: As per Railway medical norms (varies slightly by zone).
- Mental Health: No history of epilepsy, vertigo, or psychiatric disorders.
👁️ Eye Test Tip: If you wear glasses or have any vision issue, get a pre-medical check-up from a Railway-approved doctor BEFORE applying. Don't waste a year if your eyesight doesn't meet A-1 standards. Many candidates clear CBT 1 and CBT 2 only to get rejected at the medical stage. Check your eyes now.
RRB ALP vs RRB NTPC – Which One Should You Apply For?
Since both ALP and NTPC notifications are active under CEN 01/2026, many candidates are confused. Here is the honest comparison:
| Factor | RRB ALP 2026 | RRB NTPC 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Post Type | Technical (Loco Pilot track) | Non-Technical (Clerk, SM, Guard) |
| Vacancies | 11,127 | 34,500+ |
| Qualification | ITI / Diploma / Degree (Engineering) | 12th Pass OR Any Graduate |
| Salary Start | ₹19,900 (Level 2) | ₹19,900 to ₹35,400 (Level 2 to 5) |
| Extra Test | CBAT (Aptitude Test) | Typing / Computer Test (for some posts) |
| Medical | A-1 (Strict eyesight) | A-2 or B-1 (Relatively relaxed) |
| Career Growth | ALP → LP → Sr. LP → Motorman | Clerk → Sr. Clerk → Chief Clerk / SM → CMS |
Can you apply for both? Yes, if you meet the eligibility for both. But you must apply separately, pay separate fees, and choose the same RRB zone for both (since you can only register with one RRB). However, if selected in both, you will have to choose one at the time of DV.
How to Choose the Right RRB Zone
This is the question we get asked the most. Here is the honest answer based on geography and vacancy density:
| If You Are From... | Consider These RRBs | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| UP, Bihar, MP, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan | Allahabad, Gorakhpur, Ajmer, Bhopal, Delhi, Patna, Jaipur | High vacancy zones, Hindi language comfort |
| West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand | Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Malda, Ranchi | East Coast & SER have highest vacancies |
| Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh | Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bilaspur, Jabalpur | Central/Western zones, Marathi/Gujarati comfort |
| South India (TN, Kerala, Karnataka, AP, Telangana) | Chennai, Bengaluru, Secunderabad, Thiruvananthapuram | Local language advantage, less pan-India competition |
| North East, Assam, Bengal | Guwahati, Siliguri, Kolkata, Malda | NFR has 1,276 vacancies — excellent for NE candidates |

Final Words – From One Aspirant to Another
Look, 11,127 vacancies don't come every day. The last ALP recruitment had roughly 9,970 posts and over 22 lakh people applied. This time the numbers are bigger, which means the competition is spread wider. If you have been sitting on your ITI certificate or Diploma, thinking "Railway mein kuch nahi niklega" — this is your moment. Stop doubting yourself.
Three years from now, you will not remember the nights you spent studying. You will remember whether you applied or not. Whether you took the chance or let it slip. The form takes 30 minutes to fill. The exam is months away. You have time to prepare. But you do NOT have time to waste.
Don't wait for the last date. The RRB servers are notorious for crashing in the final 48 hours. Apply by 5 June 2026 to stay safe. Keep your Aadhaar updated, your photo ready, and your fee payment method working. Set a reminder for the modification window (18-22 June) just in case.
And one last thing — start preparing TODAY. Not tomorrow. Not after your cousin's wedding. Not after Diwali. Today. CBT 1 is easier than you think if you stick to NCERT for Science and Math, and practice Reasoning daily. 60 minutes, 75 questions. That's less than a minute per question. Speed matters, but accuracy matters more. Don't guess blindly — negative marking will eat your score alive.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, talk to someone. Your parents, your teacher, a friend who cleared it last time. You are not alone in this. lakhs of students are in the same boat right now, refreshing this page, checking their eligibility, wondering if they are good enough. You are good enough. Just fill the form.
We will update this page daily with official links, admit card dates, exam city info, answer keys, and cut-offs. Bookmark this page now. Share it with your friends who have ITI or Diploma — they need to see this too.
