RBI Confirms 98.47 Percent of 2000 Rupee Notes Returned to System
Why it matters
Since the Reserve Bank of India announced the withdrawal of ₹2000 banknotes on May 19, 2023, the total value in circulation has plummeted from ₹3.56 lakh crore to ₹5,451 crore as of April 30, 2026. While commercial bank branches stopped accepting these notes on October 7, 2023, the remaining notes stay legal tender.
Citizens can still deposit or exchange these notes at 19 RBI Issue Offices. Alternatively, individuals may mail the notes via India Post to these offices for credit into their bank accounts. The current recovery rate of 98.47% reflects the steady transition out of active circulation.
