Why it matters
Since the May 19, 2023 directive, the Reserve Bank of India has systematically pulled the 2000 denomination banknote from circulation. Commercial bank branches stopped accepting these notes for deposit or exchange on October 7, 2023. As of April 30, 2026, the volume of these notes in the system dropped to 5,451 crore, representing a 98.47% withdrawal rate from the initial 3.56 lakh crore.
While the notes remain legal tender, holders must now use one of the 19 designated RBI Issue Offices to exchange them or deposit them into bank accounts. The public may also utilize India Post services to mail these notes to an RBI office for direct bank credit.
